This third volume focuses on traditional and contemporary performing arts in Korea, their cultural roots, development and manifestations in modern society. Korean performing arts are rich and varied. Influences from China have been strong, especially in the areas of court and Confucian ritual dance and music, but Koreans developed their own, sometimes building on borrowed foundations, other times creating anew. What characterizes Korean performing arts most its the sense of community with unflagging optimism in the face of extreme hardship.
