An outstanding new Korean language textbook series from the Ewha Language Center, designed to develop communicative competence

New Ewha Korean is a newly developed, communication-focused Korean language textbook series from the Ewha Language Center at Ewha Womans University, a leader in Korean language education. Building on the Center’s distinctive emphasis on communicative learning and the integration of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, the series offers more effective and varied teaching approaches and learning content.

Level 5 consists of ten units, with Units 1–5 included in New Ewha Korean 5-1 and Units 6–10 in New Ewha Korean 5-2. Each unit is divided into four lessons, providing ample opportunities to practice a range of communicative functions related to a single theme. A “Vocabulary and Expressions Review” section at the end of each unit allows learners to check their understanding of the vocabulary and expressions they have learned. QR codes placed alongside the relevant listening activities provide immediate access to audio materials, which are also available as MP3 downloads from the Ewha Womans University Press website. The Level 5 textbooks are written entirely in Korean, with no translations of the instructions into other languages.

A defining feature of the New Ewha Korean series is its emphasis on strengthening speaking proficiency while promoting balanced development across all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking tasks use a variety of formats and group sizes, including dialogues, role-plays, and group activities. Vocabulary and grammar practice goes beyond building linguistic knowledge, offering meaningful opportunities to apply what learners have learned through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

At the advanced level, Level 5 places particular emphasis on integrated tasks that combine skills—such as listening and speaking, reading and writing, and reading and speaking—to create close connections between spoken and written language learning. The fourth lesson of each unit also includes an “Additional Vocabulary and Expressions” section, introducing proverbs and idiomatic expressions to help learners develop a more advanced command of Korean.
