Based on the same-titled best-selling novel, Inside Men director Woo Min Ho's political drama The Man Standing Next rewinds back to 40 days before the assassination of South Korean president Park Chung Hee in 1979. Winning Best Actor at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards and the 25th Chunsa Film Art Awards, Lee Byung Hun (Ashfall) portrays a high-ranking government official based on the real-life figure Kim Jae Gyu. Baeksang Best Supporting Actor winner Lee Sung Min (The Spy Gone North) plays Park Chung Hee while Kwak Do Won (The Wailing) and Lee Hee Joon (Another Child) portray key players of the administration.
In the 1970s, South Korea is under the authoritarian power of President Park (Lee Sung Min), who also has control over the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). Kim Gyu Pyeong (Lee Byung Hun), the director of the KCIA and the President's right-hand man, is tasked to stop the exiled former KCIA director (Kwak Do Won) from exposing the Koreagate scandal in the U.S. In the meantime, a political power struggle brews in Korea as citizens rise in protest and the head of the President's security team (Lee Hee Joon) makes increasingly aggressive power moves.
This edition comes with special features including trailers and a video about the background history.
