New Ewha Korean is a communication-centered Korean language textbook newly developed by the Language Education Institute of Ewha Womans University, a leading institution in Korean language education. While maintaining the institute’s distinctive features — a focus on communication-based learning and the integration of speaking, listening, reading, and writing — the textbook offers more effective and diverse teaching methods and learning content.
Level 1 consists of a total of 12 units. Volume 1-1 covers Units 1–6, and Volume 1-2 covers Units 7–12. Each unit is divided into three sub-units, allowing students to practice a variety of skills centered around a single theme. In addition, a "Culture" section is included in every unit, enabling students to explore distinctive aspects of Korean culture while also comparing them with cultures from other countries, providing further opportunities to practice Korean. At the end of each unit, there is a "Vocabulary and Expression Review" section designed to check and consolidate the vocabulary and expressions learned in the unit. Listening materials are accessible through QR codes placed within the textbook, allowing learners to easily access them, and the files can also be downloaded from the Ewha Womans University Press website.
The New Ewha Korean series has several distinctive features, detailed as follows:
First, by reducing the emphasis on grammar and increasing the focus on engaging, practical communication tasks, the course content is designed to be easily transferable to real-life situations.
Second, the vocabulary, expression, and grammar sections are not limited to simply building linguistic knowledge but provide meaningful practice linked to listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Third, while promoting the balanced development of the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), the textbook encourages learners to take the initiative in speaking by offering varied speaking tasks, such as dialogues, role-plays, and group activities, with diverse formats and participant structures.
Fourth, the textbook integrates and connects various skills — such as listening and speaking, reading and speaking, and reading and writing — so that spoken and written Korean can be learned in close connection.
Additionally, for the convenience of learners, Levels 1 and 2 are produced in four versions: English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. In the future, the 『New Ewha Korean』 series plans to publish a total of 32 textbooks and workbooks, covering Levels 1 through 6.
