도쿄의 마야

형은 내게 마야를 건네주었다. 나는 마야를 조심스럽게 안았다. 마야가 고개를 살짝 기울여 내 어깨에 걸쳤다. 거의 경구 형의 얼굴을 하고 있는 조그만 생명체의 목덜미에 코를 묻고 숨을 들이마시자 달콤하고도 비릿한 우유 냄새가 끼쳐 왔다. 나는 형에게도, 형수에게도, 아내에게도 들리지 않을 만큼 아주 작은 소리로 마야의 귓가에 대고 속삭였다.
“아가야, 이름이 뭐라고?”
마야는 말없이 웃기만 했다.
Gyeong-gu passed me the baby. I held Maya gingerly in my arms. She leaned against my shoulder with her face tilted sideways. Burying my nose into the nape of her neck, I inhaled a whiff of sweet, soapy milk from that tiny person resembling Gyeong-gu. In a hushed voice, I whispered in Maya’s ear out of the hearing of Gyeong-gu, Sun-yeong, and my wife Eun-a.
“What’s your name?”
Maya smiled without a word.

지금의 나는 몇 명의 재일교포 친구가 있다. 어떨 땐 거의 일본인 같고 어떨 땐 거의 한국인 같기도 하다는 말을 듣는 사람들. 그러나 어느 순간에는 티가 나는 사람들. 숨을 수도 있지만 숨지 않기도 하는 사람들. 그저 ‘재일(在日)’, 일본에 살고 있는 사람들.
I now have a number of jaeil gyopo friends. They are told they appear practically Japanese or practically Korean in different circumstances. They still become conspicuous at times. They may choose to hide yet refuse to do so. They are jaeil (在日) in the merest sense of being in Japan.

누군가의 정체성을 인정하는 것은 해석을 통해서가 아니라는 사실을 준경은 마야를 안으면서 깨닫는다. 한 사람의 정체성을 해석하고 편집할 수 있는 주체는 오직 그 자신뿐이다. 그래서 준경은 마야의 목에 코를 묻고 “달콤하고도 비릿한” 마야의 냄새를 맡으면서 아무에게도 들리지 않을 작은 소리로 마야에게 속삭이는 것이다. “아가야, 이름이 뭐라고?”
While holding Maya in his arms, Jun-gyeong realizes that identity cannot be acknowledged by way of interpretation. Only the person in question can interpret and edit their own identity. Hence, Jun-gyeong buries his nose into the nape of her neck, inhaling “a whiff of sweet, soapy milk” while whispering out of the others’ hearing: “What’s your name?”
