'유사(遺事)'라는 이름에서 볼 수 있듯이, 이전 역사 가운데 고려에 와서 없어진 일들에 관한 기록이자 정사에서 빠진 역사에 관한 기록이다. 이 책을 집필할 당시 일연은, 김부식이 <삼국사기>에서 유학적 관점에 의해 의도적으로 배제한 요소들을 보완하려 했다. 고구려, 백제, 신라 삼국뿐 아니라 고조선에서부터 고려까지, 우리 민족의 흥망성쇠의 역사를 폭넓게 다루고 있다. 또한 다른 역사서에서는 보기 어려운 단군 신화를 비롯한 우리 민족의 신화와 설화, 그리고 방대한 양의 불교 및 민속 신앙 자료를 한데 아울렀기에, 민족 주체성의 토대 위에서 우리 고대사를 바라본 최초의 역사서이자 문학서로 볼 수 있다. 후손들이 그 존재조차 몰랐을 역사를 되살렸다는 점, 그리고 일반 역사서와는 달리 당시 백성들의 생활 모습이나 불교 문화까지 세세히 담았다는 점에서 <삼국유사>는 현재 국문학, 지리, 사상, 종교, 민속 등의 연구에 있어서 기존의 어떤 역사서들보다도 중요한 자료로 쓰이고 있다.
