Im Zuge der Kolonialherrschaft Japans über Korea wurden von japanischer Seite die Affinitäten zwischen Japanern und Koreanern hervorgehoben. Diese Betonung von Gemeinsamkeiten ist in der heutigen Wissenschaft als Diskurs über die gemeinsame Abstammung von Japanern und Koreanern (jap.: Nis-Sen dōsoron; kor.: Il-Sŏn tongjoron) bekannt. Das vorliegende Buch verortet den Affinitätsdiskurs historisch und untersucht ihn als eine Diskurs- und Herrschaftspraxis der japanischen Kolonialzeit. Sowohl die Kolonisierer als auch die Kolonisierten konstruierten im Rahmen und in Bezug auf den Affinitätsdiskurs Gleichheit und Differenz zum jeweils anderen, um die koloniale Ordnung entweder zu legitimieren oder zu bedrohen. In den Ausführungen wird dabei die besondere Stellung des Westens innerhalb dieser Prozesse ausführlich beleuchtet. Der Blick auf den koreanischen Widerstand gegen die Theorie einer gemeinsamen Abstammung von Japanern und Koreanern wiederum verdeutlicht, dass die Kolonisierten hierbei in die widersprüchliche Situation gerieten, auf Argumente und Diskurse zurückgreifen zu müssen, die von der japanischen Kolonialmacht zur Rechtfertigung für die Herrschaft über Korea angeführt wurden.
