『양의 미래(Kong’s Garden)』는 어려운 가정환경으로 어릴 적부터 늘 알바를 해온 ‘나’가 실종사건의 마지막 목격자가 되면서 벌어지는 이야기를 담았다. 황정은 작가 특유의 담담한 필치는 주인공이 느껴야 할 슬픔이나 억울함을 독자가 대신 느끼게 하며 작품 속 깊이 독자를 끌어당긴다.

 가장 자주 펼쳐본 것은 서른다섯 나이에 강에 투신해 목숨을 끊은 소설가의 단편들이었다. 여러 소설가의 단편을 모은 책 안에 그 소설가의 단편 두 개가 실려 있었다. 초기에 쓴 것과 죽을 무렵에 쓴 것이었다. 첫 번째 것은 간결하면서도 힘이 있었으나 두 번째 것은 병신 같았다. 별것을 가지고 강박적으로 사로잡히고 울적해하고 비참해하다가 마침내는 더는 글을 쓸 만한 힘이 없다, 그런 상태로 살아가는 것이 괴롭다는 문장으로 마무리 되고 있었다. 다른 내용은 전혀 기억나지 않는다. 읽을 당시에도 별 재미를 느끼지 못하면서도 그 두 개의 소설을 반복해서 읽었다. 소설가는 마지막 순간에 걱정되지 않았을까. 내가 죽을 때는 어떨까를 나는 생각했던 것 같다. 병신 같은 건 싫다고 생각했다. 특히나 마지막에 병신 같은 걸 남기고 죽는 건 싫다. 걱정이 될 테니까 말이다. 세상에 남을 그 병신 같은 것이.

The Stories I read the most often were written by a novelist who had killed himself by jumping into a river when he was thirty-five. Two of his stories were included in a short-story collection of different writers. One was written in the early stage of his career and the other around the time he committed suicide. The former was compact and powerful, but the latter was pretty stupid. In that one, the narrator was obsessed with something trivial and he became depressed and miserable. The story ended with lines like I don’t have strength to go on writing and I can’t go on living like this.
I can remember no other details of the story. Although I didn’t enjoy reading it, I kept on reading. I think I wondered if the writer hadn’t been worried right before he killed himself. I also wondered what it would be like when I died. I thought I wouldn’t want to be so stupid. I especially did not want to die and leave a stupid piece of writing behind. I didn’t want to worry about it, whatever stupid thing I’d leave behind.
